7 Centuries old Stone Houses in Iran

Jan 28, 2010 149 Comments by admin1

This is pretty impressive. These are houses in Iran that were allegedly built 700 years ago. I don’t know much about it but it looks like the houses were carved into stone, unless they molded them out of some cement like material 700 years ago. I would still not want to visit Iran, but these houses are pretty impressive.

  5. Samantha says:

These must have inspired George Lucas for his design of the houses on Tatooine in the first Star Wars. They look just like Anakin’s house.

  6. darth vader says:

    is this tatooine?

  7. Olav says:

These look a lot like Cappadocia in Turkey. I’m not convinced these are pix of sites in Iran.

  8. Pat says:

If this is intriguing, check out Lallibella and Axum, Ethiopia…

  9. Emad says:

The towns name Are meimand (a small town near kerman) AND kandovan (near tabriz city)

  10. H20Rider says:

    Irrelevant!!!

  11. dude says:

There is an area in TURKEY called cappadocia, has over 20,000 houses like this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cappadocia

Made out of the volcanic rock.

  12. Bear Ryan says:

Isn’t that the set off Life Of Brian?

  13. John says:

Um…. And you wouldn’t want to visit Iran because…. you’re a bigot, perhaps.?

  14. cory says:

gee, here is an intelligent and resourceful group of people who accomplished a unique task — sure wouldn’t want to VISIT it though. this is whats wrong with the world. rather stay at home online than see it.

  15. Scooba_Steve says:

That is if they have a summer/winter seasons.

  16. xristina says:

drosera to kalokairi zesta to xeimona!!!
(cool in summertime, warm during winter).

  17. A.G.NIKKHOO says:

IRAN IS A BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY WITH A RICH CULTURE
PLEASE DISREGARD CURRENT STUPID GOVERNMENT,THEY DO NOT REPRESENT PERSIAN CIVILIZATION.

  18. Tim says:

Irans really beautiful, I’ll love to visit Iran sometime.

Sad that you would not want to visit Iran. It is a beautiful, beautiful country, and the people there are spectacular. Don’t let its government fool you. :]

  23. Johnny says:

Take a look at Sassi di Matera (Italy) too…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matera#The_Sassi

  24. frank says:

(TO JOHN), why dont YOU go and take the chance of getting kidnapped and getting YOUR head cut off by some extremist muslim wannabees over something you personaly have nothing to do with just to look at some holes carved in a mountain, and IF you make it back alive, THEN call someone a BIGGOT!!! @_@

  25. Tom says:

    And some wonderful things endure

  26. Misa says:

    Amazing for me, really… ;)

  27. Tman says:

Why would u not want to visit Iran? This is one awesome reason to visit that country, along with exploring a fascinating culture and some of the nicest people that you will ever meet. No, I am not a muslim but I have travelled extensively and loved that country. The Zionists in America have done a great job of “deamonizing” this people to push their agenda of taking america to another needless war for their and Israel’s political ambitions.Be very wary of the Jews..they have not been hated in history for nothing. Wherever they go, they try to destroy countries. Fucking filth

  28. katie says:

I would love to visit this place, but I wouldn’t exactly want to visit Iran right now either, and that’s not being a bigot, john, that is being a smart American. I would visit when there is a different administration for sure. Until then I’ll stick with visiting Turkey.

  29. srsly says:

john, kindly stfu and leave. calling someone a bigot because they dont want to visit a certain area? i personally have no qualms with the middle east and i still wouldnt want to visit. why? because there is NOTHING at these rock houses except, you guessed it, rock houses. which i just saw. cory, the problem with the world is people like you, who think that because people dont fit into their own personal ideals, there is something wrong with the world. H20rider, i LOVED the Yoshimitsu ref. (soul caliber 2 ftw) as for the people who will want to be grammar nazis, fine. if thats the only argument you have against me then you probably need it. and me? well im just trying to sober up before class. also, to the author of this post–i really enjoyed it.

  30. Mark says:

These are remarkable, like something from a fantasy or a dream. The Iranian people are not to be blamed for the actions or philosophies of their current government any more than the average American or British citizen can be blamed for the inept politicians presently occupying the seats of power in their respective governments.Iran would be a fascinating destination to travel to if safety and security issues could be resolved.

  31. Aaron says:

Beautiful pieces of history. I don’t know that I would want to visit Iran right now, given the fact that there are a few US individuals in custody for having accidentally crossed the border, being tried for espionage. However, I have been to Qatar, and find the Middle Eastern and Persian cultures to be very wonderful and interesting. Would love to visit this site sometime when relations with Iran have cooled down.

  32. maria says:

    that is so cool….
Persians have a very rich culture and i love to visit Iran

  33. Simon hat says:

These naturally formed shapes which are later carved into houses later on and have the very first underground churches also are located in !TURKEY Nevsehir! Please be more careful while you are posting something on the internet at least google first what you are posting.

  34. Tommy Firenze says:

Looks beautiful, I would love to see it in person. Didn’t they use this for Monty Python’s Life of Brian? Looks very similar from what I remember!

  35. poundpuppy says:

You think living in caves and poverty is impressive?

  36. thetruth says:

humidity has to be terrible in there

  37. yyyyyyyyy says:

    Yeah, Iran is beautiful!

Let’s all go visit the Martyr museum! And then the concrete bunkers that loom over all the coast line!

  38. rex says:

its interesting! it shows your true colors; how much there is to see… aren’t we more bless than them? we have our obligation to do our part, lets help keep these world a better place to lived in.

  39. Timmy says:

Thats really cool. People should be buuilding more houses on marganilised land like this

  40. the toothless scholar says:

Alas, these earthly abodes compare with stunning likeliness to my fiance’s snatch. Oh yes, I’m afraid that it is true… In saying so, I question why I would consider marriage with such a volcanic, lumpy, tunnel-fleshed monster?

  41. Caitlin @ Roaming Tales says:

Cool buildings! As another commenter said, you can see similar cave dwellings in Turkey. And also Tunisia. But I personally would love to go to Iran!

  42. Antonio says:

It’s nice to see that they keep them alive.

  43. Christopher says:

These dwellings look fascinating and impressive, just as the Persian culture was and will be again. Never mind the bigotry of either the west or the current regime, I would love to visit Iran.

  44. kate says:

@ John, though I see your point and the comment you’ve responded to does provoke a response like that or similar to… Iran isn’t exactly the best place to visit at this point in time.

Though I would love to visit the place – I am fascinated by the culture and people to the point of adoration – the turmoil and crazy happenings make it very difficult for foreigners (esp. Americans) to get in, and basically impossible to leave. Bigotry isn’t exactly why somebody wouldn’t want to visit.

At any rate, these houses are great.

  45. noway says:

do they hit the women here too?

  46. McLaughlin says:

That must have taken some serious time to build.

Imagine the day your mother in law comes to live with you and the wife asks for an extension§

  47. McLaughlin says:

and a side note – we all know that the government of Iran does not speak for all of the Iranian people, just like the French government does not speak for all of us here in France.

  48. lakeson says:

this is so awesome. so much culture n ideas. i’d love to stay in one of those.

  49. Rhoda says:

When I was 10 years old my family and I moved to Tehran for one year for my fathers company. Iran is a very beautiful country and the people like the American people. I never had a chance to visit this site, but I hope to visit Iran again someday.
