Here’s his description: “We are 30 meters deep, fresh water, then 60 meters deep – salty water and under me I see a river, island and fallen leaves… Actually, the river, which you can see, is a layer of hydrogen sulphide.”
It must be an unforgettable feeling once you’re there and see it with your own eyes.

Corey Helford Gallery is proud to present “Venice”, the solo exhibition of new works by award-winning Los Angeles photographer Chris Anthony. For his third solo show with the Gallery, Anthony creates an extraordinary world in flux where the moody tides of fact and fiction converge. As global warming causes ocean levels to rise and the melting of Antarctic Ice sheets, a mysterious sinking civilization is unveiled, entitled “Venice”. Inhabited by aquatic survivors and enchanting lost souls, “Venice’s” otherworldly atmosphere is heightened by Anthony’s signature aesthetic and technical artistry. Models and muses Emily Deschanel, Jacinda Barrett, Mercedes Helnwein and lead singer of My Chemical Romance, Gerard Way and his wife Lindsey Way are featured in the photographs, adding their unique persona to the dramatic narratives. The exhibition marks Anthony’s first major project shot outdoors, and his icy palette of greys and blues creates the illusion of an arctic climate, skillfully deceiving the balmy Venice Beach, California location where the series was photographed. In Anthony’s own words “Venice is a metaphor for a sinking city, deserving of nature’s wrath, leaving its citizens to tread water and explore new ways to sustain life on aquatic earth.”

if you liked Obama’s proposed climate agenda, then you’ll love Scotland’s. Not only would it require an 80 percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions below 1990 levels by mid-century, it would also require equivalent reductions from the five other major greenhouse gases. Emission levels would have to be reduced 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2030. Unlike most other international variants, it would target shipping and aviation emissions as well, reports the BBC.

Other goodies the bill includes are measures on recycling and packaging, waste reduction, energy efficiency and renewable energy for the forestry sector. In case retailers are unwilling to charge customers for the use of plastic bags, the bill also authorizes government ministers to make them do so as a “last resort”. (Several retailers have already begun charging for their use.)

A Committee on Climate Change, or other advisory body, would be established by the government to provide recommendations and guidance on its implementation. If passed by the Parliament, the bill would give the country one of the most forward-looking climate change portfolios in the world. Stewart Stevenson, the Climate Change Minister (don’t you love the sound of that?), hopes that developing a range of short, medium and long-term measures will help guarantee the bill’s success.

Scotland has been on a roll of late in the climate change/renewable energy arena, committing to building one of Europe’s largest onshore wind farms (Romania took the cake in that category) and one of its largest biomass plants while also launching the world’s largest prize for marine renewable energy. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that Edinburgh remains one of Northern Europe’s most sustainable cities (though it’s a shame the government caved on Donald Trump’s proposed golf course project).

President-elect Obama could certainly do worse than consult with the Scottish government before crafting what many hope will be his own world-beating climate bill.

The Philippine Department of Tourism’s hat has been thrown into ecotourism game for awhile now. They’ve made it part of their plan for economic development. The country’s ecotourism program strives to install processes and procedures that are economically beneficial, socially responsible, ecologically sustainable and advantageous to the local communities by creating jobs and improving living conditions overall. Palawan is the second biggest province in the country in terms of land area and has been recommended by the tourism department as the top eco-destination in the country.

The Ethics of Ecotourism in the Philippines
Around thirty percent of the people in the Philippines live in poverty, and there are 85 million people who live there. That’s nearly 25.5 million impoverished and suffering people. In 1991, the The World Trade Organization, the United Nations Development Program along with various organization in the Philippines worked to make the the nation a bastion of ecotourism. It wasn’t until 1999, however, that an executive order was passed that helped structure the development of ecotourism.

The Executive Order:

“The State shall develop and promote sustainable tourism while enjoining the participation of the Filipino people in enhancing the growth and competitiveness of the Philippine economy; and,

The State shall ensure the sustainable use, development, management, protection and conservation of the country’s environment and natural resources and cultural heritage for the enjoyment of the present and future generations.”

That executive order lead to the development of the National Ecotourism Strategy. The outline of this strategy includes spreading the wealth to the very impoverished rural areas, the conservation of cultural sites, promotion of conservation awareness, educational programs and more.

Eco-Friendly Adventures in the Philippines
There are a variety of eco-friendly activities available for the ecotourist to enjoy: Swimming with whale sharks in the their natural environment or getting out the binoculars and watching for the rare Philippine Eagle or 600 other varieties of birds. A traveler can also go to a jungle environment survival training camp where he or she can be taught to drink from a water vine, cook in a bamboo steamer and dine off a bamboo plate.

Eco-friendly Resorts
The Department of Tourism Recommends The El Nido, Lagen and Miniloc Island Resorts, Club Noah Isabelle and the Bohol Bee Farm. These hotels all carry out environmentally friendly practices: Coastal clean ups, prohibiting the gathering of shells and coral, eco-safe cleanser and many others.
