Underwater River in Mexico

If you are a professional diver you should visit Cenote Angelita Mexico.

These amazing pictures were taken by Anatoly Beloshchin in the cave Cenote Angelita, Mexico. Here’s his description: “We are 30 meters deep, fresh water, then 60 meters deep – salty water and under me I see a river, island and fallen leaves… Actually, the river, which you can see, is a layer of hydrogen sulphide.”
It must be an unforgettable feeling once you’re there and see it with your own eyes.

I dove four separate cenotes last year, it was amazing! I never got a chance to do Angelita but plan on it on my next visit!
The halocline looks fantastic in these shots!

  • Those photos are pretty lackluster.

  • Andre says:

I dove this cenote this past spring when I was visiting Tulum, Mexico. Absolutely the most breathtaking cave dive I have ever done – unfortunately my pictures didn’t come out the way these did but being 90 feet down and seeing that sulphur cloud is almost like being on another planet. Thanks for posting these pictures!

  • Matt says:

That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen!

  • Anon says:

I always wondered how sponge bob did things like showered and went to the beach.

  • Rob says:

Isn’t hydrogen sulphide poisonous? and the third picture looks like he’s swimming in it…

  • Xaac says:

Can you please explain what underwater river means? aren´t rivers water by definition? or maybe you are talking about the underground rivers of the Yucatán península? in any case, cenote angelita is an exceptional place since it is not connected to the other underground rivers all over the place, it is a sinkhole and one of the deepest cenotes near the caribbean coast of the Yucatan, impressive place, very beautiful pictures also

  • Mir says:

OMG this is really cool! I guess Goo Lagoon from Spongebob was based off of something real.?

  • Rivet says:

I have saved all of these images and will only look at them only when I want to be frightened.

  • Michelle says:

As soon as I saw the photos I knew it was Angelita, and I haven’t even dived there yet!!! My divemasters in Playa keep trying to get me to go, but I’m a bit worried about the croc who lives there. Did you see it???

  • skipnjump says:

Hydrogen Sulphide is toxic in large quantities, but only if inhaled, like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. It can irritate mucous membranes, eyes, and respiratory organs. Since they’re diving (having oxygen supply and are suited) H2S would have no impact on them. All is safe.

  • Ellen says:

any abundant stream or copious flow; outpouring: rivers of tears; rivers of words. dictionary.com

no rivers arnt water by definition

  • Matt says:

@Xaac: it is a river (water) with a river of Hydrogen Sulphide flowing on the bottom, hence the underwater river

  • Jeff says:

    Very interesting and beautiful photos!

  • Sqwerting Hardernow says:

Incredible, these shots are amazing. The river looks eerie; almost like it was created by laying down a deep, wide carpet, comprised of hundreds of gallons of blue whale (I bet you thought I’d say sperm whale, but no, blue whales produce a lot more cum!)cum, battering the bottom of the river bed. I guess I was wrong.

    these photos are beautiful

  • Ryan says:

These are absolutely amazing! I can only imagine seeing this in person. Does it actually flow like a river?

  • kim says:

Yes, nice, but whatever you do, don’t light a match down there or you’ll experience a blast like 3 megatons of tnt.

  • Hamad says:

    Me liikeee mee waant :(

  • Oldtimer says:

Wow, I dove that last December, and these photos really bring out the details that you don’t really experience while you are in there.

  • Great says:

“It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other salt and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, a partition that is forbidden to be passed” (Q.S Al Furqan:53)

  • steven says:

errr the title is abit pointlessly descriptive, how can a river not be underwater? thats like saying im going to a have a wet cry, theres no need because obviously it must be wet

  • AlexsaZ says:

absolutely no real view of the photographs, as if an alien planet, but I would dive there with pleasure, though scary

  • Dari Malaysia says:

The HOLY QUR’AN Surah Al-Furqan Verse 53 It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other salt and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, a partition that is forbidden to be passed.

This was mentioned 1400 years ago.

  • Rod says:

The vis and light for long photo shots at nearly 200 feet is absolutely amazing! This is a serious tec dive though if that deep. In the video I see at least two other divers with naught but a single tank. One other diver can be seen with a double tank.
    Really that deep?

  • Carlos Quintana says:

  • i want to see underwater river..,,

  • dacoda says:

    Amazing dive spot.

  • Jizzy says:

Ahem, Steven… clearly you did not read the above comments. These are photos of a river of hydrogen sulfide, flowing UNDER a body of water. So yes, the term underwater river applies, because the river is (in fact) under water.

    More accurately…

    H20
    _____

    H2S

Just had to clear that up, in the defense of this page’s creator(s).

And by the way, I think all of this is intriguing and frigtening… it looks like a lost world. :S

  • sirVi says:

  • Ayu says:

Woww.. Amazing..!! It’s look liked a river under the river..
